Emergency Surgery Interest Group
EGS is evolving with the appearance of some committed EGS surgeons but most of the service is delivered by generalists and specialists where they suffer the same problems and limitations. Through its Director of Emergency Surgery (Professor Pete Sagar) and the Emergency General Surgery Board (Chaired by ASGBI President, Mr Iain Anderson), ASGBI works with all four surgical Colleges, trainee representatives and specialty associations to improve matters in this area.
ASGBI and EGS
The Association:
Produces guidelines and standards on EGS services;
Has developed a future model of EGS with ACPGBI and AUGIS;
Works closely with NELA (National Emergency Laparotomy Audit) to produce reports and drive change. We can also facilitate further audit studies of the NELA patients. (Please contact Mr Iain Anderson via email);
Has been leading discussions on how to:
Modernise EGS training and curriculum through its input to SAC;
Improve access to the Interventional & Diagnostic radiology;
Tackle difficulties with patterns of EGS service delivery (rotas, hot clinics, etc.);
Support colleagues struggling with EGS.
If you would like to be kept up to date with the ASGBI’s work on EGS, please join the EGS Interest Group by emailing egsinterestgroup@asgbi.org.uk and state your name, title, telephone number and email address.
